Phil of Sh*t!
Wait, hold up am i the only one one here Black, White, Hispanic or Asian who feels that this columnist Phil Mushnick
is getting away with literary murder? This man blatantly wrote in his NY Post column on may 4th the following:
Nets on Jay-Z Track
As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots — what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new “urban” home — why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment?
Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N——s? The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B—-hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!
Referring to the fact that minority owner of the now Brooklyn Nets Jay-Z involvement in the naming, color scheme and logo for the team he’s invested in. Oh that’s easy make a play on his Hip-Hop past. Mr. Mushnick makes no mention that this man has done much more for his and many other communities than Mr. Mushnick and his rhetoric commentary has ever done (in my opinion). Now, it needs to be said that this is America and we have among of the many liberties the freedom of speech, freedom of press and most importantly the freedom of opinion no matter how baseless and un-informed they may be. There also comes a time when such freedoms should be monitored and sanctioned with editorial & social common sense.
Now it should come to no surprise that this man writes some racially and socially insensitive comments. Phil Mushnick has had a history of provoking these such written outbursts. He has written columns targeting everyone from WWE to ESPN sports personalities such as Stephen A. Smith & Joe Morgan among others. Whenever he feels he needs to chime in and correct all that’s wrong with the world. Sad, when you think that he works for a company that pretty much allow for such radical thinking and right wing conservatism. Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Geraldo Rivera & not to mention Mike Huckabee. Even the owner of their compay Billionaire Rupert Murdoch has come under critiscm recently over phone hacking allegations.
Fact of the matter is those comments made about Jay-Z and Hip-Hop were misplaced and had nothing to do with the now Brooklyn Nets. Stereotypical Hip-Hop judgements coming from someone who probably knows nothing about the music or the culture. Question is whether Mr. Mushnick knows any Jay-Z songs and how would he know if those words and references were made without him listening to this genre of music. The NBA didn’t have any problems with Jay-Z’s ownership, the board of governers aproved him just as they approve every other owner in the league.
Mr. Mushnick has since stood by has statement/article only recanting the fact that he’s not a racist, but not apologizing for the overall text of his article. He also pointed out that he was the one who outed Former Cinncinati Reds Owner Marge Schott as a racist.
No one is saying that Mr. Mushnick has no right to write what he wants in his own column just as i have the right to write whatever i want here in my own blog/column. The point is as a writer he should have used better words to get his point across without inciting a whole Genre and race of people. Poor choice of words, Sir! Especially when you write for such a huge daily publication 3 times a week.
