28 Days of Black History Month (February 10th)
Garrett Morgan was an Inventor & Entrepreneur, Born in Paris, Kentucky on March 4th, 1877. He was probably best known for the many inventions he created. Mostly self educated, Mr. Morgan was said to have atleast a 5th grade education before leaving Kentucky and moving to Ohio. Finally settling in Cleveland, Ohio in 1895. This is when his creative juices began to sprout. He was already an established inventor, he invented a belt for sewing machines in 1901 and sold it for $50. He has many patents associated with his name, although it was 2 that really stood out and was really groundbreaking.
In 1912, He invented the what is not known as a Gas Mask, although he referred to it as a “Breathing Mask”. This invention would later be used by the U.S military in WWI. Probably his most famous and still viable invention was the “Traffic Light” on February 27th, 1922 he filed for a patent.
(As with many things in life there are some claims that Garrett Morgan didn’t invent the “Traffic Light”. It has been said that it already existed before he thought of it. Either way the US Patent Office would not give out Patents to someone if someone else invented it and applied for it first) #imjustsaying
His inspiration for creating the “Traffic Light” was personally seeing an accident on the street where a someone was hurt. He then sold the rights over to GE who brought it for $40,000. Mr Morgan had a Brilliant mind and like all inventors very forward thinking. On March 4th, 1963 he passed due to failing health.
In some way shape or form we all think about inventions after they’re made and we say to ourselves “Why didn’t i think of that?”. That’s what separates inventors from the rest of society they’re constantly thinking of ways to improve our lives.Garrett Morgan achieved that and then some. #Thankyou.
