- Mass Appeal
- Genre Defining
- Theme songs
- Pop culture impact
Without further delay here’s OUR List of the Best/Top 10 Cartoons from the 1980’s (What a Decade!)
Commentary: Who can deny this cool cat, always into something. He took no mess but he wasn’t a total bully, he was just mischievous. When we refer to Heathcliff in this blog were talking about the Heathcliff/Catillac Cats combo. The Catillac Cats were definitely worth watching as well. In fact i think they helped get Heathcliff this Prestigious honor of being a Top 10 Cartoon from the 80’s on OUR list. Go Heathcliff.
Commentary: This cartoon was a huge hit in the 80’s, was truly a unique experience. Watching all these little blue characters go about their daily life, with the same challenges as a regular human society. However, it was a bit strange to know that Papa Smurf was the father of everyone in the village but there was never no evidence of a mama Smurf. The only female in the show was Smurfette & she was created by Gargamel. Gargamel and his Cat Azrael would do anything to capture and kill the Smurfs.
Commentary: This had to be one of the coolest cartoons of any era. I just love cartoons with this type of innovation and humor. Inspector Gadget was a complete goof ball had it not been for his Niece Penny and her Dog Brain he would have never been effective. This is what makes the cartoon work all of the quirky yet futuristic gadgets made the show cool. The plot is simple Inspector Gadget is a secret Agent trying to capture and disrupt the plans of the Evil But never seen only heard Dr. Claw and his MAD Organization. Love this cartoon. Go Gagdet Go!
Commentary: If you ever heard of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers & Captain Planet, they owe a huge part of their success to the creation of Voltron (look it up you’ll see what i mean). Voltron was a cartoon set somewhere in the future Were robotic lions (5 of them) would join together and form Voltron the Defender of the Universe. This was hot especially if you were lucky enough to actually own one of the voltron toys. Their was 2 other Voltron Variations, there was a car version and a Gladiator version. But none them had the appeal of the Lion version. I’m not a huge fan of Japanese animation but i did enjoy the Voltron cartoon.
Commentary: Probably the most known Theme song of any cartoon would be this one.
Life is like a hurricane here in Duckburg
Race cars, lasers, aeroplanes, it’s a duck-blur!
Might solve a mystery
Or rewrite history!
Everyday they’re out there making
Tales of daring do bad and good
D-d-d-danger! Watch behind you!
There’s a stranger out to find you
What to do, just grab on to some…
Everyday they’re out there making
Tales of daring do bad and good
Not pony tales or cotton tales, no,
The plot revolves around Scrooge McDuck and his 3 nephews Huey, Louie, & Dewey who moved in with him when their Dad Donald Duck joins the military (Yeah kind of deep for a Disney cartoon). The boys live in the lap of luxury but have to deal with their super rich yet stingy Uncle Scrooge. Who would do any thing to make more and protect his assets. He trusts no one not even a bank that’s why he has a money bin. With everyone in town trying to find a way to get his money, there was no dull days in Duckburg.
5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Commentary: You can sleep on these Turtles if you want but this cartoon was popping. I know there have been many variations over the years but im refering to the Original episodes of the 80’s. 4 Turtles (Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello & Raphael) who live in a New York City sewer along with their mentor/father figure a rat named Splinter. What made this cartoon work was the true comedic follies and Martial Arts abilities of each turtle. Together they have to save the city from Shredder a long time adversary of Splinter. Movies, Video Games and spinoffs followed but that original 80’s cartoon was the best. Turtle Power!
Editors Note: It was Truly Hard picking the last four anyone of them could have been number #1
Commentary: Robots in Disguise! if you were a kid in the 80’s this was probably your favorite cartoon/toy. Transformers were everything! i know it’s hard to imagine this cartoon not taking the #1 spot. Like we said anyone of them could take the #1 spot. The coolest aspect of this cartoon was to see how they would transform from all type of vehicles, planes & etc. I also feel that Optimus Prime has the greatest voice ever! & Megatron has the best villain name ever! (Sniff…Ahh! Nostalga)
Commentary: Thunder, Thunder, Thunder Cats Hooo!, who can even debate the greatness of this cartoon. Lion-O, Tygra, Panthro & Cheetara make up the awesome foursome. The goal was to defend third earth from the Evil forces of Mumra and his goons/mutants. Many people felt like this cartoon was a rip off of He-Man. In many it deed but still had many of it’s own unique qualities. Even though this wasn’t #1 on our list, we believe that shit would make the best movie adaptation of any of the cartoons in the top 3! HOOOO!
2. G.I. Joe (A Real American Hero)
Commentary: Of course G.I. Joe is on this list. One of the greatest cartoons ever hands down. Quite honestly if it wasn’t for my pure adoration for the cartoon in the #1 spot this would surely be #1. This cartoon had everything Good guys, Bad Guys incredible storylines that weren’t too difficult to follow even for smaller children. The Joes were in a constant struggle to keep the world safe from Cobra. Cobra Commander, Serpentor, Destro, The Baroness, Dr MindBender and many others led the attack against the Joes. The Joes Were led by Duke, Stalker & Hawk just to name a few. Who could forget the PSA’s at the end of every episode. (“now you know, & knowing is what?… half the battle”)
Commentary: Yes, that’s right HE-Man & the Masters of The Universe. This was & is still today my/our favorite cartoon of any era let alone the 80’s. We simply loved everything about it, the story-line, the characters, the theme song (which is still my ring tone). I had almost every He-Man toy including Castle Greyskull, Battle cat and etc. Just thinking of watching the He-Man transform from cool, mild mannered Prince Adam into He-Man was great. Just as equally thrilling was watching his Arch-Nemesis Skeletor run and hide when he sees He-Man and Battle Cat coming. This cartoon brings back a ton of memories. I HAVE THE POWER!
