why was it historic?
> Haiti was the 1st country in the western hemisphere to gain their independence from their slavers. In this case it was independence from France from 1791 to 1804 the Haitian Revolution was fought and won. African Slaves Along with free African descendants fought a long tedious war against France in the French Colony of Saint Domingue (Haiti). The Revolt was brutal with Slaves out numbering the White population 10 to 1 roughly 100,000 of the 450,000 slaves joined in. They pillaged the farms killed as many as 4,000 white Slavers & burned the sugar plantations.
> By 1801 Haiti was declared a free nation by Toussaint Louverture The great General who was once a Slave himself. He declared himself the Governor for life even though fighting continued, a constitution was drawn up. Jean-Jacques Dessalines One of the most influential leaders of the Haitian Slave Revolt, would eventually lead the new nation after the uprising was complete in 1804. On January 1st, 1804 Dessalines Officially Declared Independence from the the former colony of Saint Domingue and renamed it Haiti. It would be many years later before France officially acknowledged the decree.
