February 6th, 2017
As we normally do this time of year, we’re going to celebrate Black History Month by acknowledging 28 of the most influential, world changing inventions by Black People. Our goal is to shed light on some inventions that most people probably didn’t know about, some of the lessor known inventions as well some of the more notable inventions. So join us on our 28 day journey and you might learn a thing or two.
Automatic Refrigeration System
Imagine how different the world would be if the Automatic Refrigeration System was never invented. There would be no way to ship items that need to be kept cool, such as Meat, Ice Cream & all sorts of perishable foods. This idea allowed for these perishable items to be shipped all over the country via Trucks. The Automatic Refrigeration System would eventually help changed the world. Think of all of the valuable uses it serves today in our society. There would be No Fresh Direct deliveries to your home or ice delivered to your local supermarkets. Perishable items can now be sent all over the world because of this invention.
Frederick McKinley Jones
We can thank Mr. Frederick McKinley Jones for this, a African American Inventor & Entrepreneur from Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr Jones, a WWI Veteran with the U.S Army was a self taught Mechanical Engineer. Whose expertise was wide ranging from auto repairs to radio transmitter technology. During the early to mid 1930’s he experimented with several refrigeration ideas that would lead him to creating the 1st Automatic Refrigeration System built specifically for trucks to keep perishable foods from spoiling. On July 12th, 1940 he received a Patent for his invention.
Forming a partnership with a local business man Numero Jones the two form a company Called The U.S Thermal Control Company. They were hugely successful in their endeavors with the U.S Military being one of their biggest customers. By the end of the 1940’s the company was worth Millions of dollars. That company is still in business today and is still thriving under the now parent company Ingersoll Rand. Frederick McKinley Jones received over 60 patents in his esteemed career ranging from Sound equipment to portable X-Ray equipment.
Editors Note: With over 60 patents to his name Mr. Jones effectively helped change the way we live today. He simplified life with his inventions as all inventors do for that we say. #Thankyou
