As we normally do this time of year, we’re going to celebrate Black History Month by acknowledging 28 of the most influential, world changing inventions by Black People. Our goal is to shed light on some inventions that most people probably didn’t know about, some of the lessor known inventions as well some of the more notable inventions. So, join us on our 28-day journey and you might learn a thing or two.

There’s no denying that Most, if not all Inventions are sprung out of real life events. They are the very springboard for the ideas that lead to the creation. Through trial, error & countless number of hours of research. Some Inventions completely change the World, others are enhancements to existing creations that are already available. Whether it be major in stature or minor in size after they’re created we always wonder how we lived without them. There is a huge epidemic of Heart Disease in the African American Community. Due to poor dieting, health ailments that lead to Heart Disease or straight up genetics.

The need for Pacemakers are vital for those who are recovering from a Heart Attack, have a slow or irregular Heart rate or in general has weak Heart. Pacemakers are a device installed in the chest under the skin, with wires attached to the Heart. Their main function is to send Electric Pulses to the Heart to maintain a regular Heartbeat. There is another part to the Pacemaker that is almost equally important as it controls the device and allows Cardiologists to accurately adjust the amount of electric pulses needed for the Patient. It’s Called the Control Unit for the Pacemaker. It helped revolutionize the Pacemaker (who was Invented by Electrical Engineer Wilson Greatbatch in 1958) due to its design functionality. The main reason was it’s ability to withstand various Temperatures swings and pressure/stress to the Heart.

Otis F. Boykin


The Creator of the Control Unit for the Pacemaker was Otis Frank Boykin, Inventor/Engineer from Dallas, Texas. His personal heartache brought about a willingness to help others. At the tender age of 1 Otis F. Boykin lost his Mother to a Heart Attack (Cardiac Arrest). Despite being so young and hardly able to remember his Mother he was moved to act. Mr. Boykin achieved a lot in his life, he is credited with at least 28 Patents. Many, if not all are the field of Electronics. A graduate of Fisk College in Illinois, he also pursued a Graduate degree in Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. However, he had to leave school because of the lack of tuition.

His path was one that took him around the World and back, creating electric products in Paris. His Inventions included, various types of Wire Resistors, chemical air filter and a burglarproof cash register among the many creations. He received his first of many in 1959 for the Wire Resistors. However, it was his breakthrough technology for the Control Unit in Pacemakers that he is most remembered for. Ironically, Otis F. Boykin died in 1982 of Heart Failure.

Sometimes you never know what will act as the catalyst for your life’s mission. He received his early & never looked back. While researching Mr. Boykin & his Control Unit for the Pacemaker I could not find the exact year of the Patent. It should be noted that he did not Invent the Pacemaker only the Control Unit for the Pacemaker#Thankyou
