Home Security System

As we normally do this time of year, we’re going to celebrate Black History Month by acknowledging 28 of the most influential, world changing inventions by Black People. Our goal is to shed light on some inventions that most people probably didn’t know about, some of the lessor known inventions as well some of the more notable inventions. So, join us on our 28-day journey and you might learn a thing or two.

Can you imagine someone calling you and you can’t see the number or picture of the person calling? Fortunately we don’t have to deal with that anymore since the Smartphone was ushered into our life. In the time before Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) & Smartphone apps that let you watch your dog from work. People really needed something more to help them feel safer at home. Especially if you lived in a neighborhood that was prone to crime. One couple decided to put together a Home Surveillance system with all of the bells and whistles. In 1966 the Home Security System was unveiled and submitted for a Patent.

The Patent was held up due to the fact that there was other Securities Systems out around that time all of them only had, but none really suited for the Home. However, their Invention was much different in the many considering the many different components to their Home Security System. Elements like the usage of Motion Cameras, microphone, Panic buttons (that sounded an alarm if needed) & a unlock/lock option. Finally, a few years later their Invention was cleared and they received their Patent on December 2nd, 1969.

Albert & Marie Van Brittan Brown

Some people work better in pairs, what better partner to have than your actual spouse. Albert & Maria Van Brittan Jones an African American couple formed an incredible team and made history in the process. Albert Jones, an Electronics Tech & his wife was a Nurse. They lived in Jamaica, Queens with their 2 children. In 1966, the two of them were inspired by the increasingly unsafe neighborhood they lived in, they decided to do something. Knowing that in case of an emergency it would typically take a longer than average time for the Police to arrive. They began brainstorming ideas until they had the perfect concept.

They Invented The Home Security System with cameras mounted on the door via multiple peepholes. One High for taller people & one low for shorter more averaged sized people also enabling them to see what they had in their hands. What made this Invention next level was the usage of the television, with her husband being skilled in the electronics field this was an easy fix. Also a two way microphone was added to talk the people at the front door, along with an automatic lock/unlock feature. Lastly, there was a button next to the bed that allowed them to sound an alarm if they were worried or scared.

Editor’s Note:

Sometimes you don’t live to see the fruits of your labor, if you see them at all. But as I previously mentioned with the Internet now nothing is out of reach. Those who were forgotten will now be remembered. The next time you look at your CCTV just think of the Husband & Wife responsible for increasing your Home safety#Thankyou
